Why creative expression is worth investing in ⚡️

Is there a topic you’re super passionate about that you feel isn’t getting covered enough or properly, Reader? Feel like your unique perspective is missing, but don’t feel ready to jump in the ring?

Brand Strategist & Content Marketer Cassandra Le was in the same spot. After months of standing on the sidelines, though, they decided to do something about it and launched the “I’m lost, so what?” podcast to explore the nuances of “belonging” and carving your own path as multicultural, hyphenated folx.

If you too are wondering how to step up and use your voice, the latest Creating in the Margins podcast episode is for you: Tune in as we deconstruct Cassandra’s journey to uncover why creative expression is a fab life (and yes, even business) goal worth investing in.

We dig into:

  • What the frequency illusion is and why it’s a good thing if you’re experiencing it
  • The key step that’ll help you get clarity and take action
  • How focusing on having fun and what’s in it for you is not selfish, but actually super helpful
  • Why investing in your idea, even if – or actually, especially if – it’s “just” for you makes all the difference

Plus, as a special perk for being an Inside Story subscriber, here is a bonus tidbit that didn't make it on the episode:

In Cassandra's first podcast, they had a co-host, but in this new one, she went the complete opposite direction by starting off with solo episodes. I asked her how she decided to do a 180° on the format.

Cassandra:

I eventually will bring on guests, but logistics-wise, I was like, yeah, I can't do this right now. But then I also thought, “Hmm, maybe for the first couple episodes, I will be solo because I want to build a foundation first of the concepts, the ideas, the thoughts, and from that base, then I will invite people to fill in pockets where my experience and my expertise doesn't reach.”
Actually, I think my partner was the one that recommended it too, because he was like, “Yeah, I think you gotta do solo episodes because this is yours, this is your creative project, this is the expression that YOU wanted to have. It's not you leaning on anybody anymore. It's you really sharing these things that you journal about or these conversations that we have privately.” And I didn't want to start bringing on guests and then all of a sudden, it starts getting like, “Let's see what they say.” It would be me first, and then I will bring on guests.

Knowing when it’s time to call it quits

This is not meant as a humblebrag, but I've been a guest on plenty of podcasts by now, Reader. And while some interviews I felt went better than others, I never thought "Uh-oh, I don't know if I want this to air" afterward. Until a couple of months back. Melissa, a great mindset coach I know, had announced she was launching the Founders’ Fears & Failures podcast to normalize mental health struggles + redefine failure in the startup ecosystem and was looking for guests. “I know something about...

6 social media challenges to conquer to boost your creativity + mental health

I joined Facebook in my very first year of high school, Reader.Afterward, I studied journalism, media, and cultural studies when I went to university, which of course social media is a part of. I even wrote a paper on how fiction authors are leveraging social media. After university, I went into marketing, and from the start, I was the designated millennial social media person. I even remember secretly rolling my eyes when I had older colleagues refuse to use social media or didn't understand...
